Silent Boycotts

SILENT BOYCOTTS ARE the scourge of corporate America. These unorganized boycotts spread by word of mouth in retaliation for any number of reasons and hit a company before they realize what’s happening. Generally speaking, by that time the boycott has taken on a life of its own.

Toys R Us was the subject of a Silent Boycott after top management decided they would no longer sell “toys of violence” in their stores. These included GI Joes, toy tanks, air craft, guns, and similar items. This did not sit well with their customers and as a result, their market share eroded, never to fully recover.

Because of the arrogance and high handed manner in which they treated independent distributors, IBM became the target of still another successful Silent Boycott. In this particular instance, competition saw an opening and grabbed it. The flood gates were opened and Compaq computer emerged as a very serious threat  and proceeded to kick IBM’s butt with a vengeance!

Interestingly, Compaq became arrogant themselves and eventually flooded the market with poor products and questionable tech support. This set the stage for another Silent Boycott... against Compaq!

Many companies and organizations taking a stance against the Boy Scouts have become victims of Silent Boycotts. Three of these - United Way, Levi Straus, and Hewlett-Packard - have now been awarded “full” boycott status and will be featured on the Boycott Network.

Stay tuned folks! It’s just starting to get interesting!
