QUITE OFTEN IT’S DIFFICULT to determine whether a boycott has successfully impacted a target’s bottom line. For example, the target company may use “creative” accounting to mask
any financial damage caused by a boycott.
But that can only go on for so long. Eventually, the damage surfaces and the target can no longer invent any more excuses. A good case in point is the A&F boycott, by any
means a winner! Another is the outstanding success is the action taken against CBS and the Howard Stern show... a show which was finally dropped after the American Decency Association (www.AmericanDecency.org) convinced advertisiers to flee in droves (for more information on this action, click HERE).
However, the importance of a boycott isn’t just in its impact on the immediate target, but rather on how it makes others think twice before considering a similar action.
Regardless how a target attempts to show contempt and disdain for a boycott, you can bet your bottom dollar it will cost them more than a just a few bucks... it may also cost them
a loss in credibility and possibly their very organization!
