THE GREAT BARD once said, “The lady protests too much.” Shakespeare, of course, was referring to jealousy. But the same phrase has been used over the years to suggest something is amiss when
a person continually proclaims their innocence. Such seems to be the case with the “leaders” of France and Germany, both of which have been termed “weasels” by numerous journalists.
According to a recent analysis, International opposition to the war is being led by nations acting in their own self-interest. The two primary components are money and power. The three
leading anti-American nations, France, Germany and Russia all have a strong monetary stake in retaining the current Baathist regime in Iraq. All deals and treaties made with Saddam are put at risk when the
government over there changes.
France’s stake in the festivities is over $50 billion, 3% of their GDP. Germany has extensive trade ties with Iraq, providing much of the high technology machinery and techniques necessary to
manufacture and refine chemical, biological and nuclear weaponry. In fact, Accuracy in Media reports ten French firms have been providing materials and expertise to Iraqi entities involved in Baghdad’s nuclear, chemical, and missile programs.
The Germans, of course, have their own fingers in the pie: Accuracy in Media also reports eighty German firms supplied technology and expertise to Iraq’s programs to develop weapons of mass
destruction (WMD).
And Russia? Well, Iraq owes Russia nearly $10 billion for its support during the Iraq-Iran war 15 years ago. They want to get repaid.
On the “power” side of the equation, France is taking this opening to lead their attempt to construct a counterweight to what they view as American hegemony. Their preferred solution is the
European Union, led by France and Germany - something that bothers Eastern Europe a lot.
China is quietly supporting most anti-American activities, refusing to reign in their client state, North Korea, and continuing to sell weapons components to anyone that will purchase them.
Bush’s Coalition of the Willing, numbering as many as 90 nations, will supplant the UN, perhaps even NATO itself, as the premier international body of this next century. It seems we will have
made a lot of new enemies during this war. We will also have made a lot of new friends in a number of unexpected locations worldwide.
But it doesn’t stop there! French and German firms stand to lose BILLIONS of dollars in revenue from unfulfilled oil contracts.
In reality, both the French and German governments are afraid the world will see them as they are... artists playing both sides against the middle.
