Alternate Wines

TOBIN SMITH, EDITOR OF THE Changewave Financial Newsletter has this to say about the French and alternates to their wines:

WINE FIND: Wine Finders Unite -- Our French Wine Boycott is On!

Last week, I tried to throw a bone to the French by saying I'd buy some of their 2000 Bordeaux wines. I thought we should show some kindness to these confused folk in the sprit of global peace.

WRONG!

The cheese - eating surrender monkeys have done nothing to help the Allies with Iraqi disarmament. So we must do our fair share by doing nothing to help the French wine growers -- although I'm sure they are on our side in this debate.

So until the French come to their senses, we will substitute Allied wines for French wines. This means we support American, Australian, Spanish, Italian and other true Allied wines, and FORGET French vino.

My first suggestion is Le Cigare Volant from the crazy Americans at Bonny Doon Vineyard. This "Rhone Ranger" is a GREAT substitution for the Chataneuf du Pape Rhone-style Syrah and Grenache blends. The 2000 Cigare has emerged as big and rich, scented with licorice, anise and beetroot, smoked meat and cool dark earth.

As another alternative to French vino, why not try wine from Oakland?

Jonathon K., a faithful WaveRider and WineFinder, writes, "Wine from

Oakland? You bet! The folks at Lost Canyon Winery (www.lostcanyonwinery.com) have been making wine from great grapes in Sonoma and Napa for years, but just started selling to the public in 2003. Rather than spend the money on buying or leasing expensive land in Sonoma/Napa, they've procured space in the Oakland waterfront, installed top-of-the-line winemaking equipment, and shipped their grapes (procured from some absolutely great sources, like Dutton Ranch) down to them. The result: wonderful wines.

"With almost no press coverage of the winery, word of mouth has resulted in several shops and restaurants stocking their wine. If you're a fan of Rhone-style wines, this is a chance to try a small-production winery run by very nice folks who've turned out a great product."

As the winemaker says (with tongue-in-cheek--humor that seems to not exist in France), "Le Cigare Volant exists to serve mankind."
