The state of Illinois has taken the first step to officially condemn Abercrombie & Fitch for manipulating our children. The following press release explains their actions.
State Sen. O'Malley Urges Stockholders to Take Public Stand Against Abercrombie and Fitch's Inappropriate Ads
Wednesday, January 30, 2002
SPRINGFIELD-Today the Senate Executive Committee unanimously approved an Illinois Senate resolution urging stockholders to disassociate themselves from clothing retailer Abercrombie &
Fitch.
Senate Resolution 170, introduced to the Rules Committee in May 2001, also seeks to warn parents that the Abercrombie and Fitch catalogs are inappropriate for children.
Sen. O’Malley (R-Palos Park) has been sounding the battle cry against A & F since June of 2000 when Kathy Valente, Citizens for Community Values; Rev. Steve Troglio, director, Teen Reach
in Crestwood; and the American Decency Association, enlisted his support. Sen. O’Malley agreed to bring public pressure on the clothing retailer by drafting and sponsoring a resolution that would call for a boycott
A & F until the distasteful and inappropriate advertising ceases.
To its credit, the company canceled publication of the Christmas 2001 A & F Quarterly. But O’Malley says that neither the public nor the Illinois Senate should be lulled into complacency
on this issue and should keep pressure on A & F to cease from featuring nudity and from promoting a promiscuous life style.
“I think it is totally awesome,” said an enthusiastic Rev. Troglio when he learned of the senate committee action. “Without Sen. O’Malley’s influence we would not have been able to get as far
as we have on this very important issue.”
As a result of Wednesday’s Executive Committee vote, Senate Resolution 170 will advance to the Illinois Senate for a full vote.
