WE’VE RECEIVED MAIL, in fact tons of it ever since the A&F boycott was announced. And numbers being numbers, the old 80-20 concept continues holding true to form.

Yep! A full 80% support the boycott while the remaining 20% are either against it or noncommittal. Interestingly, most young adults are supportive of the boycott whereas a certain group of older men are against it. But this should come as no surprise for those who have read the A&F introduction page.

Here are some of the positive remarks:

  • (DM News, July 9, 2001)
  •    I would like to respond to [Abercrombie & Fitch spokesman] Hampton Carney's comments that "the only complaints we get are from people who are older and don't understand what we're doing. This is specifically for 18- to 22-year-olds and no one else" (Magalog's Content Right for Our Audience, A&F Says," June 25).

I am a 22-year-old who works in public relations, meaning I am well-acquainted with the marketing venture of Abercrombie & Fitch.

Though advertising clothes alongside sex is not an uncommon marketing tool -- indeed, it seems to be an increasingly popular method of selling ... as a person who is supposed to enjoy your [magalog], I would like to say I am tired of products being sold to me vis-a-vis sex, and I work hard to steer clear of products that choose to rely on it.

Therefore, Mr. Carney, I would like to let you in on something. You have it all backward.  The people who dislike what A&F are doing understand exceptionally well how you are choosing to sell your product -- and they disagree with it not because they don't understand, but rather because they do.

And this from Whitney:

I am a teenager and I am totally disgusted w/ A&F and the mag. I think that it teaches my generation that sex is casual w/ no consequences and that is wrong! I think it is about time someone took at stand, and I am behind you all the way!

From California, we’ll let Jeannie A. say it all:

Hello, I'm a recent(2001) SFSU Broadcast grad who heard about this on the Hannity show. I would be considered quite liberal and I cannot believe this. My faviorite, most respected store,it's outrageous and disgusting. I AM IN my twenties and I think the Abercrombie ads are sick. It was hard for me to believe until I went to the A&F sight right now and saw a 14 year old (looking) girl with too much exposed. They have gone beyond far, my respect for what I once saw as class is gone. This is like if Gap went crazy or something. Maybe I'm late to find out about the Abercrombie ads but I don't receive the catalog. I appreciate that the you are speaking out about this. I rarely see anyone older than me in the Abercrombie stores! What examples are young girl's being given Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, the Abercrombie Catalog? Ten year old girls etc. should not be thinking about being sexy or their weight or sex... but they are and it's sick.Guess who's promoting it? ... and there are so many weirdos who prey on kids. I only write when the earth moves me and this has moved me. I love that you are taking a stand and you have my continued support. Sincerely, Jeannie A. And some negatives (and folks, we don’t make these up!):

This is from Geoff:

Ok first of all u people are some idiots. if u don't like the things abercrombie and fitch sells or portrays then don't look at it. if u are as irasponsible enough to let your kids look at magzines and to let them do wut they want then overall it's your fault. alot of kids wear abercrombie becuse, it's about how u feel. no matter wut ocation go into abercrombie and they have it. after school, in the backyard wit freinds at a barbe-q, at a meeting, or just showing off. If u don't like your kids looking at there items then don't let them. If u don't like looking at there items (or magazines) then u yourself be an adult and take resposiblity and do wut U do and don't look at them. but u don't need to TRY (ha ha ha there the number 1 clothin sale over teens) and shut them down. mind your own bissness. and stop being a bunch of babies. your suposed to be adults!! (ya ha ha sure)!!
